On the right is what I call a 'splotch' - In the center of the splotch is usually a partially submerged leaf which interferes with the freezing in a way that is related to the shape of the leaf. >>>

The expanse of white on the right is the canal - to the left, on the other side of the trees. is the tow path. The snow fell without much wind and left a thick uniform blanket over all.
