Early
July 2008
At
the very bottom of the page are three photographs representing a
three week transformation from the egg laying Monarch parent on
the left to the emerged adult child on the right. I was
fortunate to witness the egg laying on a milkweed plant on June
27th - removed the leaf on which the pin head sized egg was
laid, and saw the tiny caterpillar emerge in a few days. I kept
a fresh supply of milkweed leaves and added them as it grew to 2
inches long and pupated (2 weeks later). It then emerged as
butterfly on July 19th. As remarkably fast as this happened,
even more interesting to me was the startling realization that
the transformation was accomplished by the combination of egg
and milkweed alone - the new butterfly was simply another form
of milkweed , using only the code within the egg. Such is the
mystery of transformation of life.

Poison Ivy is plentiful and not
difficult to negotiate with - I've learned techniques of moving through it
easily without developing a rash.

For those
with delicate sensibilities - >>> remember - my role is that of
documentarian (besides, it's cool) - the Yellowjacket is eating, the
Blowflies laying eggs. |
